Honeywell Evo Home Review

We were called to the property of Mrs Pearson in Newark on Trent as she was having issues with an existing Air Source Heat Pump which needed to be investigated. As we were not the original installer of the system, we looked into every aspect of the ASHP to diagnose the issue and put a plan together to put right the installation.

As part of the remedial work, Mrs Pearson also requested a Honeywell Evohome Smart Multi Home System to enable her to control each radiator independantly. She was so please with the finished product that she has kindly sent us this write up which we just had to share with you…

Mrs Pearson explained…

We were looking for something more efficient than the normal radiator valves that we had. After speaking with Allan at JRL Microgen we settled on the Evo Home.

Setting up the system is simple. Although our electrician did it first, we have made several changes to the system since and each change has taken less than 5 minutes a time. This includes changing the room names and reconnecting them after an accidental disconnection.

Each thermostat works independently and it’s connected to our ASHP system. So each radiator can turn the heating on for itself without affecting other radiators on the Evo Home system. Any radiator not controlled by the Evo Home will receive heat when an Evo radiator turns the heating on.

We can control this system from the main console, our phones and our Amazon Alexa. After creating an initial account with Honeywell, we were able to quickly connect the system to our phone apps and Alexa. With simple commands like ‘Alexa, set Master Bedroom to 20 degrees’ we can change the temperature in that room without turning on any other radiators, or physically going to the radiator and adjusting the setting.

However, we don’t often have to do this, we’ve set up a schedule for each room, and so all rooms are the perfect temperate most of the time. We do tend to use it when the temperature outside drops unexpectedly, then, rather than waking the children up going in to their rooms to mess with their thermostats, we just ask Alexa to increase the temperature in their rooms so they don’t wake up because we disturb them, or because they’re cold.

Once the schedule has been set up, we activated the optimisation setting that allows the thermostat to learn how long it takes to heat a room to the required temperature so it can optimise the systems efficiency. We have this working in tandem with the Eco system, which levels out the heating as it gets near the desired temperature so it doesn’t waste energy and accidently goes over the set temperature.

Another handy feature is the ‘windows open’ setting. The thermostat senses when a door or window has been left open and will turn the radiator down to 5 degrees so we’re not wasting energy heating a room with a window open. Once you close the window or door, the thermostat senses it and will turn the radiator back up to the scheduled temperature.

After a few occasions of children messing with the thermostats, we found the ‘lock’ setting. This locks the thermostat so the temperature can’t be changed by twisting the dial. We can still change it on the controller, our phones and Alexa, but children’s hands can’t change the settings in their rooms. This system has allowed us to have different temperatures in each room, at different times and on different days and the ability to quickly and easily change the temperature should we want to. With this system and our new heat pump system installed by JRL Microgen we’ve halved our monthly energy bills and live more comfortably in our home.
