Solar Thermal

Solar Thermal panels harness the heat from the sun to provide hot water for your home

By using the unlimited energy resource that our sun provides, a solar thermal hot water system can provide up to 50% – 60% of your annual hot water usage. Solar water heating systems, or ‘solar thermal’ systems are an efficient way to provide hot water to your property, utilising free heat from the sun. They work in conjunction with a conventional boiler or immersion heater which can be used to make the solar heated water hotter, and provide hot water even on cloudy days. Once installed, a solar thermal system will start making you immediate savings and are easy to fit to existing properties, or incorporate into the heating design of a new build.

Reducing your annual bills by 10% or more!

As the world transitions towards renewable energy sources, solar thermal panels are one of the top options for heating homes. JRL Microgen are specialist suppliers and installers of energy efficient solar thermal panels for residential customers throughout the country.

Flat-plate collectors
Appearing very much like solar PV panels. They are composed of a dark absorbing surface, a transparent cover, a heat insulating backing and, most importantly, a fluid that transports heat from the absorber to a water tank.

Evacuated (or vacuum) tube collectors
Made up of glass tubes to transfer the flow of liquid. These systems are more efficient than flat-plate panels, especially in cold climates.

Choosing the right solar hot water system

There are two types of solar water heating panels: Evacuated tubes and Flat plate collectors (which can be fixed on the roof tiles or integrated into the roof).

We will assess your property and identify the best place to for the collectors. Ideally they will be placed in a sunny position which gets sun for the most part of the day. We will also assess your current heating system to identify whether it is suitable for solar thermal or if any modifications are required.

Here’s how a solar thermal system works

Solar thermal systems use solar panels, called collectors, fitted to your roof or mounted on a ground frame in a suitable area. They collect heat from the sun and use it to heat water which is stored in the properties hot water cylinder. A boiler or immersion heater is often used as a back-up to heat the water further to the necessary temperature.
